The Bots -" I'm Gay" (Year Zero Records YEAR 021) 1983/2013

Year Zero Records bring you another archive release from the darkest annals of DIY Punk land.
This charming primal scream dirge comes from north-east Englands DIY Legends, The Bots; who terrorized the politically correct back- alleys of Consett during the blackest days of Thatcherism. Forget such mundane rubbish as song structure, lyrics and musicianship! What we have here is a cathartic channeling of ones inner bigot, vomited forth onto a malfunctioning ferric oxide tape. Rather like a sonic version of the head twisting scene in he Exorcist, but, with that oh-so illusive sense of lowest common denominator humour.
Outsider Punk of the highest un-quality, recommended listening for all right-on lefties and metrosexuals everywhere. Almost makes Keine Namen , The Barron Balls,or The Prats sound like the Eagles!
I'll leave you now with a short sample of the beautiful poetry from these charming  improvised lyrics; obviously channeled from the dead souls of Bryon,Keats and Shelley.........."Suck me off you cunt, I'm Gay!"

Bots drummer Eric Doob talks us through the technical aspects of the recording:

"On 'I'm gay' the Bots are Eddie Dibbs/vocals, Dirk Smedley/guitar and Eric Doob/drums. This was recorded in Eric Doob's (MY) front room on 23/1/83, the night before my first date ever. I got my end away. On 'Shit Dixon' it's Eddie Dibbs/guitar, vocals and Eric Doob/drums. Guitar was a Bontempi kids guitar with 3 strings."

2 "Shit Dixon"

Blind Man Walking - "Masss" (Year Zero records YEAR 020) 2012

Masss, Blind Man Walking is Mass plus S. Post Post musique squeezed out from between orbiting electrons. This is a field recording from inside the hadron collider, a Quantum theory of the sub-atomic structure of sound. The kind of thing that doesn’t happen if you’re watching it; with infinite possibilities that we all hear, yet don’t. Sound that stretches from the bubbling primordial soup of pre-Cambrian oceans, to the crackling circuits of a speak and spell machine subject to Hisenberg’s uncertainty principle.  This is a shadow world where saxophones are torn apart by the gravitational forces of (.............)!
Found voices mix with garbage truck percussion, and wallow in a jaccuzzi full of electronic chocolate milkshake. A sweet treat for those bored with their inner ears.Indulge those neglected senses with the sample video and mp3 below, then download it for christmasss.
Also recommended is the earlier Blind Man Walking release, "Late Diner"  , go check it out.

Keine Namen - "The Living Room Tapes" (Year Zero records YEAR 018) 1978/2012

Something akin to a lost fragment of the Rosetta Stone of DIY Punk.Three chord thrash re-animated as Zero note dirges, or rather a case of playing the right wrong notes. Diametrically opposite to Rick Wakemans' Tales of King Arthur concept album. The only concept of this album is ,'Lets do it 'cus we can', or can't,if one is refering to musicianly abilities.
Imagine the bastard offspring of Half Japanese, The Shaggs, and The Prats, and you'd be half way there. True Year Zero music.

Recorded in Fleet, UK, in the summer of 1978, originally released Suprerbun Tapes as a limited edition of about 10. This has kindly been licenced to Year Zero Records from Stupid Rabbit Tapes. Home of the mighty DIY Punk combo,Controls.

I'll leave you in the hands of Keine Namen guitarist and vocalist, Tim Naylor, to explain himself further:

"KN were Dave Mallins drums and me on guitar and voice with occasional member Nevil Ede contributing to these tracks.
None of us could play a note as will become immediately obvious.  I brought a guitar mainly to pose around Fleet with, because just being a punk had lost its gosh-wow factor and I thought ramping it up to 'being in a punk band' was the next step.  Dave decided to buy a drum kit and lo a band was born.  I wrote some lyrics and we spent the summer of 78 thrashing away in the garage of Dave's house as his parents were away in Ireland for three weeks.  A party was held at the house most evenings and eventually we graduated to playing a 'gig' at one of these parties. After Dave's parents returned (some kind of Catholic road trip) Dave's kit was wet when we went into the garage to rehearse... I was accused of gobbing on it. .. it was actually his mum spraying it with Holy waterLate in the summer we decided to record the handful of songs we had (all bar one about the sisters Dave and I had been dating - the other one being about the same girl we both dated!).  We chucked in an instrumental 'cover' of Buzzcocks Sixteen and a loose interpretation of PIL's 'Theme'.  Nevil - who also could not play guitar - came and 'helped'.  A final track 'White Cars' was recorded by me solo back at my mums flat.I (Tim) designed the cover and packaged the tape up as 'Superbun Tapes No1' (Superbun was  cartoon strip I drew when I was 14) and ran off some copies.  Ten copies were handed out to the band and hangers on."

Philip Johnson - "HEARTACHE’S WORST ASSISTANTS VERSUS THE GENIUS WITH THE SECRET OF MAKING GOLD INTO DYNAMITE!" (Year zero Records YEAR017) 2012

From the vast archives of DIY cassette legend, Philip Johnson, we bring you the previously unreleased, "HEARTACHE’S WORST ASSISTANTS VERSUS THE GENIUS WITH THE SECRET OF MAKING GOLD INTO DYNAMITE". Dating from 1986, this spoken word and sound collage involves material from between 1981 and 1986. Philip explains:"There are bits of various other tapes and records, unreleased bits, and bits recorded for the occasion to fill gaps, for instance “Black Rubber Towel” which begins the second side. It got reviewed by Dave Henderson in Underground, and an A&R man at EMI wrote and asked me for a copy. I sent him one, though now I think I really should have ignored him."

A Classic Philip Johnson melange of spoken narrative, found sound, noise, tape manipulation, and unhinged songs.

Prutsers - "Volume 1" (Year Zero Records YEAR 016) 2012

Prutsers recorded in the living room from Jan in Rotterdam between 1983 and 1987.
They sound rather like  the motherless sons of The Residents and an Oompah band. Obscure Inspired Insanity at its most obscure and inspired.
Especially fine are the cover versions of rock and pop standards, which firmly put those upstarts in their place, and then piss on their smoking entrails.

Henk Madrotter explains the Prutsers Raison d`etre....."we used any kind of instrument we could get our hands on, kids toys and sometimes a commodore 64, mostly recorded with a mic to a cassette recorder with the "ping pong" method and later with a 4 track cassette recorder.... we did weird covers and we also did covers as cheesy as possible and lots of our own songs in all kinds of styles depending our mood and who ever was there for recording, but mostly it was me, jan, patrick and robo."
He continues on the tenuous subject of influences!!!!....."most of us came out of the old Rotterdam punk scene and we were heavy influenced by bands like snakefinger, einsturzende neubauten, this heat, throbbing gristle, the whole neue welle you name it. We made music on any instrument we could get our hands on and the cassettes that we made, we never sold them but plenty of people were copying them."

The debut recording from Noise Improv Free Rock unit Üwan (pronounced ooo-wuh-on) is definitely an uncompromising beast. Ranging from paint stripping noise to subtle atonal aural exploration.
Recorded live in the Year Zero studio, It features Year Zero Stable mates Phil (Blind Man Walking) on Tenor Sax (drums track 1) and Nick (Thee Mark Chapman Experience) on Electric Guitar.

The Barron Balls - "(Not an) Anthology : 1978 - 1984." (Year Zero Records YEAR014 ) 2012

The Barron Balls?......Never heard of 'em?....Of course you haven't, that's N.Senada's much celebrated "Theory of Obscurity" in action. Already formed as schoolboys in Leicester,UK, 1978; The 'Balls' were inspired into obscurity by the concept of The Residents album "Not Available"; although I severely doubt that the Residents had actually forgotten about recording that album,as stipulated under the rules of Senada's "Theory".
This is not the case with The Barron Balls' "Not An Anthology" collection, which all involved had almost total amnesia about. Therfore under the rules of the mysterious N. Senada, it is now qualified for release, which it now is,thanks to Year Zero Records.
The Barron Balls, named after The Baron Knights, began life as a sort of mini Great Rock'n'Roll swindle in 1978, where merchandise was produced to promote a band that didn't exist. Many badges and stuff were sold promoting the 'band' as 'The Kings Of Cock Rock'; after a headline spotted in Sounds about The Raincoats, Kleenex and The Slits,(although I don't think any member of the aforementioned combo's had a single cock owner amongst them at the time). Being teenage boys, they decided not to go with the original intension of the phrase, that is anti-sexist female emancipation with a feminist agenda (very 'Right-on');but instead take the purile opposite direction, which is more in line with the actual 'Rock' philosophy of the male dominated world of the sixties and early seventies, a parody of 'Free-Love' as you will.
Many sexually offensive parodies of Hit songs were prepared, using found objects as percussive instruments.(Using their environment years before Einsturzende Neubauten eh?)
A performance was arranged in the school, charging 10p admission. Decorated in various plastic shopping bags from well-known supermarket chains to disguise identies, Vas Deferens, VD Scabs Round The Mouth, David Van Hellmann, and C.W., performed atrocious versions of hits by The Jam,The Members, and Kate Bush, before the 'gig' was raided by the authorities after 15 minutes, and forcibly disbanded...........result!
This was the height of their fame, now to make a cassette and forget. This time with original material, acompanied by a super-8 movie.
This slowly evolved over the ensuing years, producing a musical style that was a cross between The Residents and Danny and the Dressmakers, their two biggest influences. Nonsensical Science Fiction and exopolitics replaced the 'Cock Rock', resulting in a chaotic fusion of proto white rap'n'roll ,concluding in sometimes hilarious consequences, all recorded in glorious lo-fi.This is NOT rock music!
But, like fellow schoolboy legends, The Prats, the loss of innocence with the onset of adulthood, lead to a maturing of the sound, and the later recordings showed an unwelcome sophistication. Actual songs played with a creeping competance on real instruments materialised from the chaos; it was time to stop, and forget.
Leicester can now boast another DIY cassette culture legend, alongside The Midnight Circus.

The Barron Balls were:

Vas Deferens
David Van Hellmann

C.W.

All recording re-mastered from the original cassette recordings.

This year has seen a flurry of activity by wharf99, culminating in the release of
the “Pulse E.P”: http://wharf99.bandcamp.com/album/pulse-ep
This 4-track E.P (plus a 5th bonus “hidden” track with the full download)
features remixes and edits of the track “Pulse” to be included on the album,
“The Shapes Of Synths To Come”, scheduled for an early 2012 release in
conjunction with Year Zero Records. The E.P. also includes an exclusive B-side,
“Dark Wave (Dubcycle Drum Mix)” which was long-listed for the recent
Beep Filtered competition on SoundCloud.
Earlier in the year, ABC Radio National’s “Sound Quality”Link
(http://www.abc.net.au/rn/soundquality) featured the single, “36 Years”, which
represented something of a shift in style by this independent artist who has
previously dabbled in ambient, soundtrack, indie and electronic sounds and
textures.
Based in Melbourne, wharf99 has been assembling self-produced home
recordings for the past few years, taking advantage of the benefits of DAW
software and the deluge of mobile phone apps that make it so much more
convenient to be a DIY musician. Like the forthcoming album, the “Pulse EP”
features music created, recorded and processed in various iPhone apps, such
as NLog MIDI Synth, ShapeSynth, Argon, Nano Studio, Funkbox, Hokusai,
SunrizerXS, etc.

Wharf99 - " Analogue Demo 001 / Shapesynth vs Nodebeat #1 " (Year Zero records Year 010) 2011

Two exclusive tracks from Wharf99 for Year Zero Records first single. And its a goodie, lush warm analogue noodling, timeless electronica for leaking flotation tanks. On the correct side of ambient, to avoid the hideous comparison with New Age. Hope to have a complete album on here soon.Meanwhile here's a superb taster.

Bio:
"Based in Melbourne, wharf99 has been assembling self-produced home recordings for the past few years, taking advantage of the benefits of DAW software and the deluge of mobile phone apps that make it so much more convenient to be a DIY musician. The latest release, “36 Years” was triggered by playing around with the Kinetic iPhone app that by chance happened to capture a snippet of a radio documentary on Vietnam. This was then processed to become part of the source material for a heavy-duty sound-clash workout, complete with subterranean subsonic dub version on the b-side. Meanwhile, wharf99 has recently been messing around with analog-style apps like Filtatron and ShapeSynth, the early results reflected in Analog Demo #1"

Scouts Of Uzbekistan - " the scouts of uzbekistan e.p. " (Year 008)

Its the new ep from Scouts Of Uzbekistan, more of the usual avant garage rock from your very own fun lovin' muslims.
Don't think for a second this music is NOT very dangerous. I've seen the effects on test people in labs. Part of my eyes doesn't work so good any more now because of seeing that. Daleks came and shouted at us, grown ups in animal suits slobbered and yodelled for our delight on weekends. The Huntley and Palmer fruit lozenge bonging noise from the cold place, near the beginning, is a sneaking hunt trumpet tantivvy to the rugose cones that that nice Mr Howard warned us of. No one twigs. Not once. And so they gain stronger in strength everyday sitting out in the jungle while you get softer waiting for your orders. If you had ever listen to Pink & Perky, the way I know some do, and then learned everything you could about the creeping cat black magic that Les Gray used to make his tiger feet so neat, then you'll have some idea what magnitude of proportion we are actually dealing with. You gruffing doshers.

FLIPART - " Ataxia " (Year 006 )

Flipart is the psuedonym for artist Philip M. Allison, and this cd is a complimetary product to his artwerk, which inevitably can be heard as soundtracks to his videos or as accompanying musick for his art installations
ATAXIA is a melange of Saxophone,Clarinet and the Glitch. A computer age nu post jazz masterpiece. Flipart has that rare ability to create musick that helps the listener achieve that rare goal of aurally understanding the moment when you see what is really on the end of your fork. Life is brutal, but this record helps you remember that there aint no god. I love it

Thee Aethyr are N.Allison(instrument) and Justine Reynolds (voice)
Daaark ambient electronic dreamscapes, with a smattering of bells and singing bowls. Thee Aethyr is the ambient arm of Thee Mark Chapman Experience, displaying a more hypnotic and mystical quality therein;like a scrambled underwater radio broadcast from the ancient edges of the observable universe,- thats twelve billion light years to the under informed out there. Highly recommended download for those wracked by anxiety, or just too stressed to cope with anything abrasive. All this without being wishy washy or "new age" (yuk!). Thee Mark Chapman Experience - " Housewives Sold Ice As Chicken " (year 004)

Experimental Post Ambient Quasi-Industrial Noise Rock.......just made that up, but it applies as an adequate genre for the music of Thee Mark Chapman Experience. The name is not an attempt to glorify murder, but a symbolic reference to the end of an old musical order, so calm ye down Beatles Saddo's everywhere (Although we are all Yoko Ono fans here).
The album starts with "Absolute Zero" , where the listener is plunged headfirst into ear splitting seering noise, be not afraid for the whole album is NOT like this."Exit Via Entrance" is a doom laiden peon to life, a dull distant thud as a countdown to an inevitable demise. The situationist sounding "Ne Travaillez Jamais!", is an improvised post jazz collaboration with Phil of Flipart, who contributes drums and clarinet."We Will Fight" samples Reverend Jim Jones's final call to arms speech against a teutonic funk backing.......I'm not gonna go through every track, but i think you get the general idea, its varied and experimental, and can get extreme listening, especially "Red Shift/Blue Shift", which sounds like a thousand guitar drone galactic rollercoaster, ascending and then descending in a light speed simulator.
Download and enjoy, if enjoy is the right word.

Thee Outside - " Deaf Disco " (Year 002)

Bizarre dark Drum'n'Bass stylings with a splash of Black Humour here from Nick Allison of Thee Aethyr, from back in the days of 1997. Still sounds remarkably fresh, maybe because it isn't yer bogg standard Drum'n'Bass format. Fused with Electronica, with a dash of Exotica, found sounds, noise samples, crossed with a drop of only the best in Elevator Muzak. Nick doesn't like to "Ghetto-ise" himself, hence the name Thee Outside. You could even dance to this if you were so inclined and on drugs.Probably the most commercial record on Year Zero!
Think Luke Vibert, Aphex Twin , Squarepusher and U-Ziq as musical references.
